Award ahoy – Sailing base wins RICS title

What are you up to this weekend? If you’re out and about, you may want to pop down to see Sir Ben Ainslie’s Land Rover BAR yacht racing headquarters at the Camber.
The base has been newly crowned as the South East overall Project of the Year by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).
It scooped the prestigious honour at the organisation’s awards ceremony in Brighton last night and now goes through to the national finals.
It beat off rivals from Hampshire, Berks, Oxfordshire, Surrey, West Sussex and Kent to claim the sought-after title.
The awards showcase the most inspirational regional initiatives and developments in land, property, construction and the environment.
The Project of the Year title is presented to the scheme which demonstrates overall outstanding best practice and an exemplary commitment to adding value to its local area.
The Land Rover BAR hq is described as ‘a single multipurpose base to bring together the key functions of boat building and design, marketing and team training with a Visitor and Education Centre’.
RICS says that the entry explained it was ‘one building for one team with one vision – to bring home the America’s Cup to Britain’.
Judges hailed the centre as a ‘stunning building, set on Portsmouth’s historic waterfront, which encapsulates the spirit and ethos of Great Britain’s bid to win the America’s Cup’.
They added: “The building was constructed in a remarkable 11 months and is almost carbon neutral with photo voltaic panels on the roof, high efficiency boilers and rain water harvesting for boat wash-down and sail ballast.
“At the core of the building is a five storey atrium housing the workshop where the racing boats are developed. The administration, team briefing rooms, gym, mission control, canteen and exhibition hall are placed on various floors directly overlooking the workshop, thereby reinforcing the overall team spirit.”
The project was also the winner in the ‘Commercial’ category and highly commended in the ‘Design through Innovation’ category.
As a RICS registered firm, we always take a keen interest in the RICS surveys, awards and market intelligence whilst also working to their high standards.
Our Managing Director Bill McAndrew, Director Ian Lee, Consultant Ken Veness and Chartered Surveyor Alf Wimshurst are all Fellows of RICS while many of our staff are Members of RICS.
Congratulations to Sir Ben and all of the RICS team.
