Building foundations for growth

A new survey has suggested that some bricklayers are now being paid £1,000 a week as the construction industry builds on strong demand.
According to Manpower’s research, prospects in the industry are at their strongest level since 2007 with a shortage of suitably skilled workers blamed on the recession.
Apparently, the profession became less attractive for newcomers during the downturn, which was compounded by an ageing workforce, bricklayers deserting the sector in search of better pay and developments being placed on ice.
Of course, £1,000 per week is the exception rather than the norm but it shows that the industry is picking up again, with the Home Builders Federation pinpointed an increase in house-building activity after the launch of the government’s Help to Buy scheme.
Planning permission was granted on some 230,000 new homes in the last year, according to the Department for Communities and Local Government.
We’ve chalked up a record year in 2014 – our 25th anniversary year – with demand surging for our property-related services across the board.
As we look forward to 2015, with the recent boost of stamp duty reform and record low interest rates due to continue, the signs are good that the momentum will continue.
Some estate agents say they have already seen a ‘bounce’ from stamp duty while others expect to see a vibrant market early in January.
