Building on solid foundations

New figures have given a fresh boost to the property market with improvements in construction and mortgage approvals.
An influential survey has revealed that confidence levels in the construction sector have reached a nine year high.
The CIPS/Markit Construction Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) rose to 55.9 in May, up from 54.2 in April. Readings above 50 indicate growth.
It shows that the sector is bouncing back following a two-year low in April, and that stability is returning following the Conservative majority in the general election.
In a double boost, new data from the Bank of England showed that mortgage levels hit their highest level for 14 months in April.
According to the Bank, there was a 10% rise in approvals for house purchases from March to April, the highest month-on-month increase since 2009.
Although this total of 68,706 in April is up, it is still far below the peak of 129,996 in November 2006 when the property market was booming. Analysts don’t expect to see figures hit the heights of those years.
The Bank figures reflect findings by the British Bankers Association last week which also revealed that mortgage applications had shot up to their highest level in nearly a year.
We’ve noticed the Spring bounce at McAndrew Martin with a rise in demand for our surveys and property related services continuing into June.
