Facing challenges with innovation

Some 31 years after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in the Ukraine, innovative structural engineering is playing a central role in making the site safer.
The decommissioning of the area includes major remediation work and construction of facilities to process and store spent fuel and radioactive waste.
This includes the construction of a giant arched hanger or ‘New Safe Confinement’ facility over wreckage to allow for safe demolition and decontamination.
Weighing in at 36,000 tonnes, it is tall enough to house London’s St Paul’s Cathedral and twice the length of a 747 commercial jet.
Other works include the design and construction of a new interim spent fuel storage facility, liquid and solid radioactive waste treatment plants and a solid waste storage complex The major facilities have been designed for a 100 year life.
The fascinating insights into a project of this magnitude were spotted by our head of Structural Engineering Noor Awan in the latest Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers journal.
Written by Fulcieri Maltini and Sergey Asamov, it details just some of the challenges and innovations of the scheme.
Structural Engineering is one of our six core disciplines at McAndrew Martin. The other are Building Surveying, Project Management and Contract Administration, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Architecture and General Practice.
We make sure all of our expert professionals remain at the top of their fields through monitoring of industry developments, membership of professional and trade organisations, continuing professional development, training and sharing of best practice.
Contact Noor on [email protected] and 02392 697193 to find out about our Structural Engineering services, which cover the full range of requirements – although we haven’t been called upon to help at Chernobyl (yet)!
