Flushed with success

We’re involved in one of out more unusual building projects – to convert disused public toilets into new offices.
The project at the former conveniences at Drayton is for local lettings agency Brewers the Lettings Agency.
Brewers aims to move to the two-storey development in Lower Drayton Lane – to be named The Old Loos – from its offices in Cosham High Street when the scheme is finished in May 2015.
James Bengree , who is based at our headquarters on the Fairway Business Centre in Portsmouth, designed the new offices.
Our director Ian Lee said: “We were pleased to provide architectural design services and specialist support for Brewers to progress this scheme.
“With a refurbished ground floor and completely new first floor, there has been scope to create a fresh and innovative look.
“We have a strong working relationship with Brewers and have been able to use our combined expertise to breathe new life into a disused building.”
James worked on a brief to give the new offices a post-industrial look with grey and black tones, and upright windows aligned on the design lines of the original block.
The new offices will also include a disabled public toilet with separate access, which was included in Brewers’ bid to the council for the freehold of the building.
Brewers, which recently underwent a rebrand, has been trading in Cosham High street for seven years and will rent out its offices when it moves to its new home.
The company has been posting updates about The Old Loos on its Facebook page and running a competition for loo-themed jokes with the best entrant winning a bottle of wine.
Managing director Daryn Brewer said: “We were keen to regenerate this site with a quality development which would be of value to the area.
“Our bid to the council also included a disabled toilet for the community as we felt that it was a much needed-facility needed locally.
“We are looking forward to relocating to the new offices and helping to bring more business into Drayton as well as freeing up our premises in a prime position in Cosham for another business to take advantage of.”
Portsmouth City Council sold the freehold of the public toilets after closing them in November 2013.
Brewers has gained planning permission from the council for the two-storey scheme.
It is one of just a range of varied projects we get involved in all the time as a leading practice of chartered surveyors, engineers and architectural designers.
We also deliver conservation services for developers, commercial clients and landlords of prestigious properties across the South as well as surveys, risk assessments and project management.
