Good luck to Sir Ben and team BAR

The starting pistol has fired on the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series off Portsmouth.

Thousands of spectators are expected to pour into town to join in the four-day extravaganza at Southsea.

The highlight will be the breath-taking races pitting Sir Ben Ainslie’s British team Land Rover BAR against France, New Zealand, Sweden, Japan and the USA on Saturday and Sunday.

There will also be a whole host of entertainment over the weekend, including music and displays.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are due to give the Royal seal of approval when they visit on Sunday.

One of the other high points of the event promises to be a Portsmouth Live! concert on Saturday with Spandau Ballet, Wet Wet Wet, McBusted and Carly Rae Jepsen.

The regattas are part of the America’s Cup World Series being held worldwide in the lead up to the competition’s grand final.

Each of the teams taking part in the World Series will host two regattas in 2015-2016 with the winner earning the right to face defending champions USA in a head-to-head showdown for the ultimate America’s Cup prize in 2017.

The events should bring a multi-million pound boost for Portsmouth over the next two years and raise the city’s profile worldwide.

The Portsmouth News has launched a superb America’s Cup website with all the information you could need, from profiles of the teams to details about parking and events.

It’s a superb site and is well worth a look at http://americascup.portsmouth.co.uk.
