New figures show jobs boost for Portsmouth
Portsmouth has bucked the national trend with unemployment falling across the city.
The latest figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed that 2,215 people were claiming Jobseekers Allowance in March, down from 2,240 in the previous month.
Nationally, unemployment increased by 21,000 to 1.7million between December and February, according to the ONS.
A report in the Portsmouth News has showed that numbers were also down in Gosport from 625 to 615 and in Havant from 1,185 to 1,175.
There was a slight rise in Fareham from 480 to 485.
This contrasts with the national figures which showed that UK unemployment rose by 21,000 to 1.7 million between December and February.
It is always good to see unemployment fall locally, and this may be due in part to the seasonal economy as we move towards summer.
Nationally, the picture is more complex with economic growth figures, business confidence, the ramifications from the Chinese slowdown and the EU referendum all coming into play.
Broadly though, most analysts believe the labour market is in fairly good shape.
In more good news for borrowers, housebuyers and many businesses, the Bank of England kept interest on hold at their record seven-year low of 0.5% although savers may now have resigned themselves to a poor return for some time.
Most experts don’t see expect to see a rise before the EU referendum or even before 2017.
Any stability in the property market and wider economy is very welcome as we near the referendum and move through the second quarter of the year.
