New proposals lift off for Heathrow’s third runaway

Plans for a third runway at Heathrow Airport have taken another twist after new proposals were unveiled to save £2.5bn from its cost.
The expansion bill is now expected to drop to £14bn, with money saved through reducing space and breaking building work into stages.
When construction starts, the runaway will be one of the country’s major infrastructure works alongside such high-profile projects as Crossrail and HS2.
Our Director of Project Management and Contract Administration Lee Sargeant has been watching with a keen professional interest.
At McAndrew Martin we monitor all of the latest industry developments and best practices to ensure we continue to deliver the very highest standards of professional customer service.
Lee Sargeant is RICS qualified and has a BSc (Hons) degree in Building Surveying. He has a wealth of experience in MoD, residential, commercial and engineering projects, including schemes with multi-million pound values.
It is critical to be able to understand the exact requirements of any given brief, from the drawing board through to execution in an efficient, comprehensive and cost-effective way.
Our expertise in Project Management and Contract Administration includes cost control, stakeholder engagement, meeting key objectives, developing strong client relationships, project evaluation and risk assessment, contract administration, contract documentation, monitoring of construction work on site, and ensuring projects are delivered on time to the required standard and within the allocated budget.
Project management at Heathrow will be absolutely vital for plans to go smoothly. Various options are being presented to the public as part of a 10-week consultation period early this year, according to the BBC.
The expansion would increase Heathrow’s capacity from 85.5 million passengers to 130 million.
In its latest announcement Heathrow said the extra passengers generated by the new runway could be split between Terminals 2 and 5 instead of a new standalone terminal for the extra runway.
According to the Department for Transport, unless there is expansion London’s five airports will reach full capacity by 2034.
Heathrow aims to start building in 2021 and plans to complete the runway by 2025. Project management and contract administration will be vital to hit these targets.
Project management and contract administration is one of our six Directorates. The others are Architecture, Building Surveying, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, General Practice and Structural Engineering.
