On the crest of a wave – new America’s Cup boost
On the crest of a wave – two America’s Cup sailing regattas are to be staged in Portsmouth in another boost for the local economy.
Sir Ben Ainslie’s British team will race against yachts from Sweden, New Zealand, Italy and France in 2015/2016 in the city’s waters.
The Portsmouth News today reported the plans and said that the races could bring more than £1million to the local economy.
Sir Ben’s team base is currently being built at the Camber Dock in Old Portsmouth in time for the prestigious regattas.
Each of the teams will host two regattas in 2015-2016. The winner will earn the right to face defending champions USA in a head-to-head showdown for the ultimate America’s Cup prize in 2017.
The Portsmouth event will bring visitors into Portsmouth to spend money but also boost the city’s profile and image as well as provide business and sponsorship opportunities.
The fresh boost comes after Sir Ben’s decision to base the Great Britain team in the city. The News reports that the some 1,000 jobs are set to be created and £40m injected into the local economy as a result.
