Planning revolution for brownfield sites?

New proposals announced today by the Government to revamp the planning laws in England are well overdue.
The ideas include giving developers automatic planning permission to build on disused industrial sites and giving Minsters powers to seize disused land.
Major housing projects could be fast-tracked in a bid to solve the country’s serious housing shortage.
Under the proposals announced by Business Secretary Sajid Javid, automatic planning consent would be given to brownfield sites – land which has previously been derelict but is now vacant or derelict – under a new ‘zonal’ system.
There will also be beefed up compulsory purchase powers to ensure enough brownfield sites are available.
Measures also include moves to force councils to deal with planning applications more quickly.
As a leading firm of chartered surveyors and provider of property-related services in Hampshire, London and the South East we’ve seen first-hand the fierce competition for land and property over recent years.
We launched our own land and new homes division last year to ensure we could provide the necessary depth of expertise to forward schemes.
The new proposals – which will have to be approved by Parliament – will go some way towards ensuring more land becomes available for housing as well as commercial developments.
If you’re thinking of a development scheme or need land or property surveys, architectural design services and property-related solutions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
We can also explain in more detail about the potential implications of the proposals. Or you may have a brownfield site which now may have more potential for development.
With interest rates kept again at their record low of 0.5% today as well as low inflation and strong land and property prices, now might be the best time to start planning ahead.
