Unemployment figures fall again in Portsmouth
Portsmouth is bucking the national trend with unemployment dropping again.
Figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed that the number of people claiming jobseekers’ allowance fell from 2,170 in July to 2,166 in August.
In Gosport, it dropped from 656 to 629 and from 459 to 441 in Fareham. In Havant, the figures rose slightly from 1,050 to 1,059.
Not the greatest changes granted, but they do show the prevailing trend across the Portsmouth and Hampshire area.
As reported by the News and the BBC, the number of people claiming the benefit across the South East as a whole was down from 59,866 to 59,589.
However, nationally, unemployment edged up by about 10,000 compared with the previous quarter to 1.82 million.
The unemployment rate was 5.5%, unchanged from the previous quarter but down from the milestone figure of 6.2% last year.
ONS figures also showed that the long-awaited rise in UK average earnings is finally arriving.
Between May and July, average earnings excluding bonuses grew 2.9% compared with the same period last year, according to the ONS.
