What are you up to this weekend?

If you’re taking a walk around Gunwharf Quays this weekend, you’ll probably see the Spinnaker Tower decked out in its new colours.

The landmark is now decked out in blue and features the Emirates airline branding, while more metallic gold is to be added over the coming months.

After the initial outcry over the colour scheme – red! – it seems as if the furore over the £3.5m sponsorship deal has finally been resolved.

According to the Portsmouth News, the Big Lottery Fund has finally given its approval for Portsmouth City Council to receive the cash from Dubai-based Emirates.

The fund took on the responsibilities of the former Millennium Commission, which granted £40m for the transformation of the harbour.

According to the council, the naming rights deal with Emirates will help secure the future of the Tower and benefit the city.

The Tower will now be known as the Emirates Spinnaker Tower. In return, the council will get a very useful £3.5m plus Emirates will spend £1.5m advertising Portsmouth on its flights, in its VIP lounges and magazines.

All this means very welcome profile for Portsmouth and couldn’t come at a better time in combination with the exposure being generated by the America’s Cup World Series.

We held our 25th anniversary party at the Tower late last year and can vouch for the landmark as a tremendous venue, whether as a tourist attraction or for a corporate function.

As a community minded firm, we’re always pleased to see positive developments in Portsmouth and the wider area.

Have a good weekend, whether you’re shopping at Gunwharf Quays or just relaxing.
