What’s the going rate for pocket money?

How much pocket money do you give your children?
A new survey from the Halifax – best known for its house price index, of course – shows that youngsters aged eight to 15 get an average of £6.54 a week.
And interestingly there was quite a gender divide with boys receiving an average of £6.93 a week compared with £6.16 for girls.
That means boys get 13% more than girls – with the gender gap increasing by 2% on last year.
Halifax questioned more than 1,200 children and 575 parents for the annual pocket money survey, which also showed the average yearly rise to be 6%.
It also means youngsters have now seen their pocket money reach the pre-credit crisis levels of 2007 – does this now mean we can say we’ve officially recovered from the recession?
Unsurprisingly, 40% of children questioned also said that they wanted more pocket money.
According to the Halifax, London children receive the highest amount of pocket money at £8.21 with youngsters in East Anglia getting the least at £4.96.
In the South East it was £6.83, the highest outside of the capital.
Of course, it’s never too early to start teaching youngsters about the value of money – and especially about saving money!
Getting on the property ladder early is important too although of course that is increasingly difficult for the younger generations these days especially when it comes to saving for a deposit.
We see people of all ages come through our doors for surveys and property related services, including architectural design and property related services.
As one of the leading firms of multi-disciplinary chartered surveyors in Portsmouth and the south, we pride ourselves on delivering the best professional advice and personal service.
The face of money is also changing. Halifax’s survey coincides with the launch of the design for the new £5 note featuring Winston Churchill which is made of plastic rather than cotton.
