What’s your blueprint for election success?
Greater emphasis on training of home grown talent, reduced VAT for energy efficient construction materials and more retirement home building are among the measures in the Institution of Mechanical Engineers’ manifesto for the general election.
IMechE has set out its blueprint for the sector as the leading political parties publish their own manifestos for the general election on June 8.
It outlines the priorities for action for the new Government with ‘practical, workable solutions’.
The decision to leave the EU places greater emphasis on education and training of home grown talent, according to the Institution.
It says we need a far greater proportion of highly skilled, numerate, digitally and technologically literate young people.
This means a broader school curriculum to remove the need for specialisation at a young age and measures to increase interest in technical training.
Greater focus on the quality and final competition of apprenticeships is also crucial, according to the Institution, as well as a ‘robust and fully funded school careers strategy for a modern technological UK’.
At McAndrew we are a firm believer in staff development, supporting our employees to fulfil their potential and forge successful careers.
We have an award-winning apprenticeship programme; some of our apprentices have risen through our ranks to become directors of the business.
Other measures in the manifesto include reinstating the reduced VAT rate for energy efficiency construction materials, promoting sustainable energy use and mitigating and adapting to climate change. This includes tighter regulation for new build housing with energy efficient materials.
The Institution also urged the construction of ‘cognitive home’ communities for the over 65s
Designed with older people in mind, they would provide cost effective accommodation close to NHS facilities to help address the predicted 160,000 shortage in retirement homes by 2030.
